mP Jules-Measuring Train ATB / train radio coverage

The measuring train mP Jules is used for inspection and measurement of signaling devices in the track and train radio coverage and signal strength as well. Additionally the train is used by Eurailscout as a test platform for development and testing of new measuring systems.

Frequently all Automatic Train Control devices (ATB) on the Netherlands Railways are measured by the mP Jules. The measuring system developed in The Netherlands includes calibrated magnetic coils, sensors and computer system which allow a precise measurement of the magnetic field of both rails.

Radio signal coverage and signal strength of the train radio system along the track are measured. Both train radio systems - the old analogue one and the new digital GSM-R are surveyed. The mP Jules is also used to support the implementation of the new uniform European train radio system GSM-R in the Netherlands.

Display of Data, Storage and Analysis

With the installed GPS-system all measured data is referenced to the point of the track. Results can be observed on the screens during the measuring run and are stored digitally as well. Severe faults are reported immediately. A text report is condensed by the measuring team from the results.

Measured data (permanent):

Automatic train control (ATB)

  • Correct function of code-transmitter and -receiver
  • ATB-code
  • Level of the code
  • quiescent current
  • Nonsysmmetry between both rails
  • Dutycycle

Train radio (Telerail)

  • Radio signal power
  • Power and area of switch transmitter
