5. Decentralised rectification of breakdowns

The test systems on the trains must supply the client with reliable information. Breakdowns during a campaign must therefore be rectified directly. Depending on the location of the test train, many kilometres are travelled to rectify breakdowns by fitters on the spot.

The SIM shows that decentralised rectification of breakdowns is possible. It may well be that the techniques developed for the SIM will provide solutions for other test trains.

The aim is to investigate possibilities of decentralised rectification of breakdowns on all other Eurailscout test trains. By using the systems on the SIM, the intention is to make 50% less car journeys and flights compared with the old test trains for decentralised rectification of breakdowns.


Calculation of emissions saved by

  • Reduction in car kilometres related to rectification of breakdowns at 0.5 tonnes of CO2 (100km x 2 = 200 km x 210 grams CO2 =42000 grams CO2 per breakdown x 24 breakdowns = 1008000 grams CO2 x 50%)
  • Reduction in flight kilometres related to rectification of breakdowns at 1.92 tonnes of CO2 (1200 km x 2 = 2400 km x 200 grams CO2 =480000 grams CO2 per breakdown x 8 breakdowns = 3840000 grams CO2 x 50%)
