Visual Switch Inspection

Functions and characteristics of the Video inspection system:

  • Intelligent compression techniques allowing the resolution of the cameras to be maintained whilst restricting the volume of recorded data to approximately 15 Gb per hour of monitoring
  • High resolution line-scan long-term pictures
  • Synchronised reproduction of all pictures

Description of the video inspection recording system:

  • 2 panorama cameras (placed to the front and to the rear): High resolution 2D colour cameras full HD: 1920x1080 pixels. These cameras are placed at a height of 1.70 m, so as to   approach the perspective of the running inspection
  • 4 line-scan cameras for the side of the rail: High resolution of 0.7x0.7 mm with a width of 80 cm. These cameras provide recordings of the outer and inner sides of the rails, including the inner parts of switches
  • 2 coloured line-scan cameras for the view from above the top of the rail: High resolution of 0.7x0.7 mm with a width of 140 cm per camera. These cameras together capture the view of the tracks;
  • 2 coloured black and white cameras for the detailed view of the rail head: High resolution of 0.15 x 0.15 mm. These cameras deliver a resolution that is needed to find cracks and other anomalies;
  • Lights: all line scan camera pictures are lighted by LED lamps

With the help of intelligent software, the images can be analysed and examined for defects. These could be used for automatic identification for following defects:  

  • Determination of the missing fastening devices depending on  the type
  • Crumbling of concrete rail sleepers affecting safety
  • Cracks in the concrete rail sleepers affecting safety can be detected up to 0.5 mm
  • Ballast deficit and ballast surplus
